AIRFARES

Unfortunately summer is high season for travel and the airlines know it. Consequently airfares rise. There are many options worth looking into. First, consider the charter that Liz Hansen's mom is trying to arrange. It might be a good deal-but compare before you buy. The Net may offer low cost deals. Be sure to check several sites as prices vary wildly even on the Net. (200% difference were found for the same flight between Washington and Lisbon at competing (ha!) web sites.) Expedia.com seems fairly reliable. If you are flexible with your departure dates and return date you might find a bargain. Remember too that airlines charge higher fees on certain days, typically Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday will cost you an average of $25-50 dollars more than flying the same route on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Watch the newspaper ads too. Sometimes in late winter or early spring airlines will wage fare wars. Hop on when the price is right.

TRAVELING

CAR RENTAL

NOTE: Unless you are making alternate housing arrangements outside of Evora or are doing independent travel, car rentals are unnecessary and discouraged for meeting attendees. In Evora, all activities are within easy walking distance of lodging. Bus transportation will be provided while in Lisbon and Sagres. Renting a car is discouraged by conference planners due to narrow streets, lack of parking in ancient towns and harrowing local driving habits.

LISBON to Evora (July 29 and July 30):

Option 1: Taxi from Lisbon Airport to bus station "Arco do Cego" (15 minutes) ±10 euros and then a bus to Evora (±2 hours) ±8 euros. (Bus leaves every hour from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.)

Option 2: GNSI Express bus from Lisbon Airport to Evora (hotels) ±10 euros NOTE: from July 29 ( 9:00 PM) to July 30 (11:00 AM) the time of bus departure and number of GNSI Express buses can be adapted to fit conference participantsÕ arrival times at airport. Attendees must forward their arrival information to conference coordinators.

Option 3: Taxi from Lisbon to Evora (± 1 hour, 15 minutes) ±100 euros. Fees depend on time of trip, i.e. day or night, and traffic. (Example: four people (maximum), price per person would be ±25 euros.) NOTE: taxis and buses are CASH ONLY (PTE (portuguese escudos), NO CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED!

EXPRESS BUS

ÉVORA to Lisbon (Aug. 4): GNSI Express bus will leave Evora University (6:00 PM) to Lisbon (hotels) - 10 euros.

LISBON to Sagres (Aug. 6) GNSI Express bus will leave Lisbon (hotels) (6:00 PM) to Sagres (hotel) - 15 euros.

MONEY

For your convenience ATMÕs can be found at the airport, at the bus station to Evora (REDE EXPRESSOS, "Arco do Cego") and almost everywhere (look for MB signs, Multibanco), also inside Evora University, next to the classrooms. To get escudos any time you must bring credit card with a pin number, otherwise you will depend on Currency Exchange Offices and Banks open only during working hours. ATMÕs usually accept VISA, you can also use Visa Electron, American Express - Express cash, Eurocard/Mastercard, 4b card and many others (consult your bank or agency). You can use a credit card (VISA) to pay hotel, food and shopping almost everywhere (except small villages). U.S. dollars are equivalent, more or less, to euros. ACCOMMODATION BOOKING FORM

There are accommodations available for Évora and Lisbon (July 30th to August 06th 2000). Please download Accomodation Booking Form (PDF) to be read with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Reservations have to be made by May 30th 2000 to secure your reservations. (The earlier the better!)

There is currently no information listed for accommodations in Sagres. Here is why and what we are doing about it: Due to the limited number of overnight accommodations in Sagres and the fact that this is the high season for tourism, ALL rooms are currently booked by two different European tour agencies. Thus there is no room at the Inn. So folks, do you remember when I said that Portugal is treating our conference as a National Event? Well here is a classic example of just what I mean... Pedro, ever resourceful, called the Portuguese Army to come to our rescue! They will be mobilized to construct a tent encampment for us in the Natural Park near Sagres for two nights. This actually might be a better solution than it first appears. For one thing it gets us all together for the last couple of evenings. Secondly our camp will be in a splendid location providing a chance to experience a bit of the Portuguese wilderness, stunning sunsets over the Atlantic and amazing star-studded skies. (Meteor shower anyone?) And it will still include access to toilets, hot showers and comfortable beds. One more bonus, the price is right. Cheap!
