CALL FOR POSTER ENTRIES - Bar Harbor, Maine 2001

By Kris Kirkeby

Bar Harbor, here we come! Last year's poster session in Portugal was a nice success and the Maine group has decided to add it to this year's line up. This article is your official call for entries! We're encouraging last year's entries to do a repeat performance so if we missed the European meeting we'll get a second chance. Please note the deadlines at the end of this article.

We hope individual members or chapters will put together a poster presentation of information about the specific techniques used in Scientific Illustration - new and classic art mediums (carbon dust, color dust, silver point, pen and ink, coquille board, scratchboard, etc.), or subjects within specific field: entomology, archeology, botanicals, computer generated images, etc. Or write up that special project featuring a specialized or unique approach that would interest scientific illustrators. More than one person can author a poster - teaming up will make it less labor intensive.

Poster presentations are often used in scientific meetings as a way to show large numbers of projects in short amounts of time. They are a form of presenting information as a visual aid to a verbal presentation. It should be able can stand alone as a communication or serve as a tool to aid a short summary talk. Posters depend heavily on visuals rather than text. The viewing time at a poster is usually fifteen minutes or less. Most of our illustration work and techniques are particularly well suited to this format. However, it's very important to spend time editing and reducing text so it is concise and clear. A text-wallpapered poster goes unread! Posters can be designed using small units of information pasted on mat board or railroad board backing; larger pieces, hinged to collapse down to a smaller size; or as a one-piece electronic output poster that can be rolled, unfurled, and very easily put up.

The Guild has two video tapes that may help you. The first is an overview of posters as a communication tool and provides tips for preparing a poster. The second is a assembly method demonstration (hinged-pieces technique). The tapes may be checked out from our Video Library, GNSI, Inc. DC office for the price of shipping.

Your first step is to write an Abstract which is a condensed summary of the poster information. This abstract must be 300 words or less. We will have a abstract booklet available at the meeting.

The following information is very important. Our format size limitation this year is the same as last year.

POSTER SIZE: Design for a 32 x 40 inches space or approx. 0.9 x 1.2 meters. Suggestions for font and lettering sizes - these sizes make reading easier for your viewer: Use a Sans Serif font style (such as Helvetica) which is easier read from a distance. All written text on the poster should be in Bold. Use space-and-a-half leading or double spacing.

TITLE: List the title of the poster, your name, specialty (botanical illustrator, etc.) when applicable, and affiliation (museum, university, or freelance illustrator, etc.), your city/town, and country. It should be in 72 point but your name etc. can come down to 60 or 48 point.

SUBTITLES: Help partition information: Abstract, Methods, Discussion, Results or Summary. Use 36 point lettering.

REMAINING BODY TEXT: Should be in 18 point.

Presenters are responsible for assembling the poster unless you are not attending the meeting and you send it to the Maine committee. If you are flying to the meeting hand-carry your poster on the plane, don't check them! You will be put up the posters on the afternoon of the Portfolio Showing (see deadline dates below) and they'll be shown in the same area. You must come with a completed poster, time will be given to putting up the poster but not for composing it. Organizers will provide pins, scissors, Velcro, double-sided tape, and spray adhesive glue, etc. for attaching it to the board.

DEADLINES:
