The 26 letters in science illustration - combining writing and images
- Diana Marques
www.dianamarques.com/PresentationGNSI.htm
(the slides will take some time to load, especially if you're using a
dial-up)

And because the handouts never made it to everyone, you can find the list of books consulted at:
www.dianamarques.com/PresentationGNSI-books.htm
(didn't include the tables with the evolution of letters here but I can
email them off list)

Dissection of a Digital Illustration
- David Feirstein
Example.
3D digital is more similar to non-digital 3D work than to 2D digital.
Painting in Photoshop requires more or less the same abilities as
traditional painting. But to do a 3D project, you have to wear a lot
of different hats, and learn new skills if you don't have them. You
get to be a sculptor, painter, exhibit designer, and photographer.
You sculpt your models, texture and paint them, arrange them in a
scene with a background set, light the scene, and take a picture of
it. And then touch up your photo.

For the full presentation on constructing an illustration with 3D
elements, visit:

Inspiration, experimentation and applied techniques.

Digital Watercolor Wash Handout - PDF file
- Jennifer Fairman
A digital illustration technique that uses traditional painting
principles. Follow a step by step presentation that starts as
traditional line art sketch and is then brought to life with color
and style on the computer screen using glazes, airbrush, "wet"
paintbrush, and more.

Terragen
- Britt Griswold
Terragen is one of the easier to use terrain rendering programs. It
provides exceptional rendering of atmospherics and is therefore very
useful in speeding the work of background creation in landscape
images or the creation of geologic rendering elements.

By incorporating Digital Elevation Model files into Terragen through
16-bit TIFF or RAW formats, accurate representations of actual
terrain are possible. Texturing can be accomplished with fractal bump
mapping and coloration. Or imagery can be projected on the landscape.

Version 2 of this program is scheduled to release in 2006 with many
advances in all areas of the program.
