Horicon Marsh Horicon Marsh is 32,000 acres of wetland containing waterways, islands, wooded and prairie shorelines. It contains an extinct glacial lake and Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. Devil’s Lake State Park Devil’s Lake is fascinating. Within its boundaries are effigy mounds, stunning geological formations and spectacular natural beauty. Enjoy a day of guided hiking through the park and learn about its intriguing natural and anthropological history.

International Crane Foundation Located in nearby Baraboo, this is the only spot in the world where you can see all 15 crane species at one location. The ICF works to conserve cranes and the wetland and grassland ecosystems on which they depend. Visitors will spend the day taking a guided tour, hiking and sketching.

Half Day Field Trips
8am – Noon

Baraboo Hills with Rick Bott Rick and his wife have invited us to come to his incredible property for a second, full day! Within minutes of hiking you will discover canyons with multiple waterfalls, evidence of Paleolithic cultures, and an amazing variety of microclimates preserved because of the geological uniqueness of the area. Great field sketching opportunities are around every corner and up every hill. Rick said that Three Bird Orchids, one of 10 species growing on his property, should be at their peak at this time, so bring your camera, too. Believe me, this area is so amazing and varied that our two field trips won’t even begin to overlap! Activity level: Moderate to slightly strenuous hiking. It is hilly and rugged. If you are unable to hike a separate group with less physical activity can be formed. Let us know your ability.

1 – 5pm

Museum Tours - The UW Chazen Museum of Art has a small but wonderful collection of naturalist paintings. See these and get a guided tour of the museum, then visit the nearby Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.
