I've lived for 25 years in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, known for it's spectacular gorges and waterfalls. It is fascinating to watch the weathering process in the gorges; the way plants exploit the smallest niches in the shale and sandstone gorge walls. Carbon dust seemed the medium of choice for bringing out the contrasts between the delicacy and fragility of the ferns, lichens, and other small plant life in contrast to the hard edges of rock, and the powerful rock-breaking roots of the oak tree.
