Purpose: Frontice piece to “Evolution of the Side-necked Turtles”, Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History, No.300
The assignment was to develop reconstructions from a selection of fossil skulls that highlight the bizarre forms that can be found in ancient side-necked turtles. Based entirely on the available skull material, we looked to modern analogs in the animal kingdom to help us visualize soft-tissue forms. A record of the scute patterns, left as impressions on the bone, allowed us to define important features, such as scales and beaks.
