The editor requested artwork for the journal cover (Publication: Systematic Biology, a journal of the Society of Systematic Biologists) representing an article featuring the vast diversity found in fungi. The greatest diversity of complex, multicellular fruiting bodies in fungi is produced by the homobasidiomycetes and therefore they were the majority of the piece. Sixteen homobasidiomycetes as well as three ascomycetes are depicted. The Editor requested a compilation of diverse fungi to represent an article in the journal, leaving the design and layout to me. The Editor supplied some of her own slide images and I took some of my own photos of various fungi while hiking on the Appalachian Trail in Vermont. Several field guides were used for reference as well.
