transparent watercolor on Arches 300# cold pressed
11"w x 14"h
Purpose: Original transparent watercolor created for the ’07 juried exhibition ‘Granny’s Garden’ at the Philadelphia Flower Show. Also for use on my web site (www.koths.com) and portfolio.
First I grew the lily plants from tubers to use as live drawing specimens and then I painted the Gloriosa throughout the summer as it progressed through the life cycle of the plant. The painting is based around a modified S composition, chosen because of the naturally twisting, climbing form of the Gloriosa lily. The intriguing bud/crown shapes create a cap at the top of the painting, while the bottom blossom hangs down below the main forms and the delicate twining tendrils add visual directional lines.
