Where is Olympia?

Olympia is located on the west coast of the United States, in Thurston County, Washington State. Olympia is about 60 miles southwest of Seattle, Washington;  115 miles north of Portland, Oregon; and about 75 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Olympia is at the far southern edge of the Puget Sound.

The GNSI Conference will take place at the campus of The Evergreen State College (TESC), which is about 6 miles north and west of downtown Olympia.

The nearest airport to Olympia is the Seattle/Tacoma Airport (Sea-Tac). It is located about 50 miles north and east of The Evergreen State College in Olympia, about a one-hour drive. There are shuttle services that run between Sea-Tac and the Evergreen State College:

Local bus connections are inexpensive, but you will need to use a total of three buses to get between Sea-Tac and the Evergreen State College. Factor in at least two and a half hours of travel time.

    Take the Sound Transit Bus 574 from Sea-Tac to the Lakewood Transit Center. This is an Express Bus that crosses two zones, so the fare will be $2.50 for an adult.

    Bus 2 is the Intercity Transit Bus 601 or 603 (weekdays) or IT Bus 620 (weekends) from the Lakewood Transit Center to the Olympia Transit Center. Weekday schedule, weekend schedule.See how the Sound Transit and Intercity Transit schedules mesh together: weekdays, weekends.

    Bus 3 goes from Olympia Transit Center (downtown) to the Evergreen State College Campus, take Intercity Transit Route 41 or Route 48. Bus fare is $1 for a single trip or $2 for an all-day pass.

The Amtrak train system has a stop in Lacey, Washington this is about 8 miles east of downtown Olympia. The Olympia-Lacey train station  is served by the Coast Starlight  train (which runs between Los Angeles, CA and Seattle, WA) and the Amtrak Cascades train (which runs between Eugene, OR and Vancouver, BC).

To get from the train station to downtown Olympia Transit Center, you take the bus, either Intercity Transit Route 64 or Intercity Transit Route 94. From the Olympia Transit Center to the Evergreen State College Campus, take Intercity Transit Route 41 or Route 48. Bus fare is $1 for a single trip or $2 for an all-day pass.

Washington State operates the largest system of ferries in the United States and the third largest ferry system in the world. While none of the ferries stop directly in Olympia, travelers may find themselves using passenger or auto ferries as they move around Washington State as a whole or travel between Washington and British Columbia. Bringing a car to the conference? You'll have a lot of flexibility in getting around town, but be prepared to navigate through one-way streets and pay for parking on campus and downtown.
